Exactly...I was just getting online to write that that song is ABSOLUTELY meaningless without Jesus. Period.

I know. But they tried! It's a start.

I'm still amazed...

I haven't seen it yet...we just got back in from church....but the school in Goshen, CA is the small town outside ours...the school is within the school district that I teach in, so we are so excited to see it!

I will miss you this weekend, I had every intention of driving 6 hours (or more) with my best friend, but she could not get childcare in her newly separated state....have an AWESOME time, tell my friend Corri, I said "Hi!"...she lives down there! Ü

Holly, we were a divided household. Curt was pumped and I was irked that they took out Jesus' name. It sounded beautiful though and I really was moved. Hopefully lots of people will download it from itunes tomorrow and praise JESUS to it!

Well, I was a quite taken aback with that first line, "MY shepherd, my Savior." But, as I let the Holy Spirit wash over me I was able to worship along with my AI favorites. By the end of the song I was in tears. They can try to take "Jesus" out of it. . . but He's still there!! Oh yes He is!!

I'm with Travis. I'm just amazed they picked that song to close the show. . . . out of ALL the songs they could have picked. As the judges would say, "Song choice is everything!"

Yup, GREAT song choice. I'm going to download it and praise my Jesus with it.

Still lovin' AI and praising my Jesus, my savior to boot,
~Cheryl

I just stood there shocked when I heard it. Who would have thought it!

I suspect they'll be a whole lot of mixed reactions in the body of Christ... I didn't watch, but have read an awful lot of blogs about it this morning with most people being upset. No opinion here... yet. Gotta think it through. After all, they DID try...

I was thinking the same things. I just hope they didn't do it to get Christians to download it for $$...is that too cynical?

WHAT????? is right!!! I sat stunned as they sang Shout --- then it all came back to reality when Ben Stillers bombs were bleeped over and over.

I didn't realize they took Jesus' name out of the song until this morning as I watched it on YouTube. I agree Travis, it is a start. I was in shock they sang Shout to the Lord. My Jesus, My Savior, Lord there is none like You!!! Praise His Name, He is Worthy!

Have a great Thursday!

My husband and I were watching with mutual feelings. I kept thinking how God created them to know Him and to know it was Jesus. Maybe some of them do...I just sat there in disbelief to here those awesome lyrics uttered to the world - but without the name of Jesus it broke my heart and made me want to pray that what they did sing would make them want to search for the One and Only! :)

I don't watch idol, but I did turn the channel just in time to hear them sing the last song. I almost came to the blog to talk about it right then. Anyway, I enjoyed the song, they did a good job singing it, however, why did they have to change the words? It's a start, but what kind of message does that really give people? It's OK to sing these songs and leave out the name Jesus. Then it's just a song, kind of like hymns. Without Jesus they are bar songs.
I will continue to not watch idol. :-)

I was hoping you'd tackle that one. While I was initially excited that they were doing that song (albeit a little confused!), I was very disappointed in their PC'ness. They whole song is about the name of Jesus...taking His name out of it when the rest of the song is ALL ABOUT HIM just seems pointless. But, it was something, and we know God can use anything to bring people to Himself.

I do wonder why they chose it, though.

I know...I just posted my thoughts on it..I will say this, the Word does say that "every knee bow and every tongue confess...." I think we saw a little of that last night.

I'm amazed that they picked THAT song and not something like Israel's and New Breed's "I am not Forgotten"!

I thought it was awesome! Even if they left the name "Jesus" out - His Glory still shown through!! (Did you notice Kristy raise her hand?) First, Dolly singing "Jesus and Gravity" - all the way to "Shout to the Lord"! Who would've thunk it?

I went to church and then watched Beth on "Life Today" and got in on the last 20 min. of AI.
When I heard that they were going to sing "Shout to the Lord" I was so excited and was on the phone with my mom trying to tell her which channel FOX is on her tv....I think I must have missed something that y'all are talking about???? I was so excited and amazed that they would choose that song that I was just thrilled that thirty something million viewers were hearing "Shout to the Lord."
What did I miss??

It almost felt to me like they were taking the Lord's name in vein. It lacked "the Spirit". Maybe one or two of them meant the words but praising the Lord in song isn't meant to be used as a "performance."
I don't want a trend to be started where they take Christian songs and perform them because they are catchy or have a good hook. Praise songs to me aren't a trend - they are a prayer from my heart.

That song is one of my most favorite songs and I was shocked in two ways when I heard it. First I was shocked they would even sing it as a featured song to begin with and two I was surprised when they left out Jesus but kept in all the other words. I know it's all about Jesus and all but I feel so happy that at least they did such a inspirational song and did a very good job at it too!

We were stunned! Loved it! I don't think it was necessarily meaningless changing the word; Jesus is my shepherd. My hubs wrote a good piece about it.

The name of Jesus has been spoken far MORE this season on Idol than in the past and now this!! Can I get an AMEN?? This show is watched by millions and any time in Hollywood our Lord can be given praise is HUGE. Lord there is NONE like you!

OK, I have calmed down enough to actually read the other comments and I have to sya that , yes Travis - it is a start.  It was bold to choose that song to end it all and I AM impressed with that.  And, as prfbaugh said, they can take His name out, but they can't take HIM out. I had to point out to my Hubby at the end that they changed the words cause he was worshiping away ... so, I guess it WAS effective...

I may have gone a little overboard in the last comment ....

But I still say, if it's good enough Dolly it is good enough for the final 8!

"Nuff said ... shutting up now!

I didn't see the show, but I did download the song after reading this post. The song says, "My Jesus, My Savior", I am assuming they didn't sing it that way on TV. What a night to forget to set the DVR!! It was full of episodes of the Waltons and Bonanza, I'm so bummed!!

My tivo did not record AI - UGH!!
I saw the clip on Vicki Courtney's blog though.
They took out Jesus yes but they sang that song in front of tens of MILLIONS of viewers - AMAZING!
I agree it is a start and God will receive the glory.
Praying for you.

To me, it just goes to show that we need to be even more diligent in making sure we convey the meaning behind our words -- especially when sharing the gospel.

I am amazed that non-Christians can sing and/or enjoy such a profound worship song without comprehending its meaning. This reminded me of a friend who read a Christian best-seller whose main point was that "our purpose is to glorify God." He is not a believer, yet said he enjoyed and agreed with the book.

Our evangelistic task has gotten harder.

----

On another note, the idol finale also seems hypocritical for a show that booted Mandesa because her Christian performance was labeled "self-indulgent."

I had to jump in here and say HALLELUJAH that they did it right on Thursday night! It brought tears to my eyes to hear Jesus' name proclaimed with such emotion and so beautifully with a gazillion people watching! Gotta wonder what Simon was thinking...
