My Favorite Hymn

Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy

Come, ye sinners, poor and needy
Weak and wounded, sick and sore
Jesus, ready, stands to save you
Full of pity, love and power

I will arise and go to Jesus
He will embrace me in His arms
In the arms of my dear Savior
O, there are ten thousand charms

Come, ye thirsty, come and welcome
God's free bounty glorify
True belief and true repentance
Every grace that brings you nigh

I will arise and go to Jesus
He will embrace me in His arms
In the arms of my dear Savior
O, there are ten thousand charms

Let not conscience make you linger
Nor of fitness fondly dream
All the fitness he requireth
Is to feel your need of Him

I will arise and go to Jesus
He will embrace me in His arms
In the arms of my dear Savior
O, there are ten thousand charms

Come, ye weary, heavy-laden
Lost and ruined by the fall
If you tarry 'til you're better
You will never come at all

I will arise and go to Jesus
He will embrace me in His arms
In the arms of my dear Savior
O, there are ten thousand charms

Oh, I've sung that song a jillion times and love it! Didn't realize till now that it was a hymn.

And I'm a Southern Baptist Preacher's Kid!

I am ashamed. I'm doing the PK's a disservice.

;)

I always get chills when I play this off the old LPL CD, and especially when I've heard you sing it at the conferences. Love, love, love it. I am trying to exercise self-control by not sending you a request list for the conference I'm coming to this summer! Ha ha! I love all y'all Cottrells.

Oooo, I love Fernando Ortega's version of this! I bought the CD just for this song.

We sang it in choir in E. Texas, too!

I bet you'd do a great job with this one, Travis.
PRaying for you and your fam,

I know that song. I go to World Outreach in M'boro and it is non-denom and we sing contemp praise and worship(which I love) but I was raised Southern Baptist and at times I miss singing the Hymns. I am so glad for the last two posts.
Blessings,
Patty

I love this song too.
I have a Jami Smith cd and she has this song on there.
This is a dumb question, but can you explain what the ten thousand charms part means? I know what I think it means, but....
Thanks,
Valerie

"Were you there", "It is Well with my soul", "To God be the Glory","I have Decided to Follow Jesus", "What a Friend we have in Jesus", and so many more!! I go to an A/G church and we do fewer hymns than I would like;I reaize if I want my kids to know the hymns I grew up with it is my job to introduce them! Great post, Travis!

Amen and amen! Have you heard the Michael Card version? It gives me chills and tears every time.

TC: look at us agreeing on music! My favorite, as well. I was introduced through Jamie Smith's version, but love Robbie Seay's take on it.

Valerie: there's no scripture that mentions 10K charms, but it could reference several things. Matthew "rose and followed Jesus" and was so jazzed about Him that he threw a party. Zachaeus did the same thing. Both of these guys were scummy (according to others) tax collectors, and Jesus was criticized for reaching out to them and fellowshipping with them. But He responds that He comes to those who know they are needy; He meets those who reach for Him. Second, I think it takes a dovetail with the beauty of the Song of Songs; that in our place of most critical need and longing, in the arms of our Savior and Lover is the greatest delight.

Just one dude's opinion...

Travis,

Oh do I have a story for you about this song!

The first time I heard you sing this was at a Beth Moore (with Kathy Troccoli) conference in Memphis, June 2001. Actually, I believe it was the first time I had heard you and the praise team sing--period. I bought several of your CDs including the Living Proof Live ones (1 & 2) I believe.

We played that song, "Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy" on the way back to St. Louis. That song stuck a chord in the heart of the women in the van. One woman in particular was praying for her husband to accept Christ. We joined her in that prayer on Saturday as your song played.

Since my own husband was our sound person at church he played your version of "Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy" at my request that Sunday during the offering/communion time. My friend's husband accepted Christ during the invitation at the end of the worship service. It's one of those experiences where I had "chills" all over.

To this day I'll always associate you singing "Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy" with that day--the POWER you had to communicate Christ's invitation and love!!

Anyway, I'm sure you've heard lots of stories like these. Just wanted to share my experience with your version of this song.

Thanks, Travis. You're a blessing!!

Much love,
~Cheryl

I believe there are MORE than ten thousand charms in the arms of Jesus...but I just love that visual! I will arise and go to Jesus. He is a precious Refuge. Ok, that's two charms...precious & refuge!
Love this hymn so much, too, Travis.

I wanted to pass along to you my WL's blog... he give stories behind the songs we're singing in worship each sunday... This week included are "Are you Washed in the Blood" and "Power in the Blood"

I do love that song... I had to go out to cyberhymnal though to get the tune in my head... I knew it was in a minor key, but couldn't get the melody completely. Anyways... I think I remember it being on one of the earlier LPL cd's.

That is one soulful song and you sing a great rendition of it. Have you ever heard Kate Campbell sing it? It is absolutely slaying. I love the new music, but the hymns have my heart from childhood. Thanks for the reminder in this song's blessing.

Love it! opening my music library now to sing it!

I've never heard this before. Been thinking today about how God is deepening my definition of sin and widening His definition of grace to me. I've thought too shallow on sin---Paul said at the end of his life, he was the chiefest of sinners. So, reflecting on the words was really neat!

Can we put in requests for Siesta Fiesta?! ;)

So when are you going to do a nifty arrangement of your favorite hymn on one of your projects?

Unknown said...

I had never heard or sung this hymn with any meaning whatsoever until...several years ago...I heard your version of this beautifully crafted song. Amazing what an arrangement and vocal with depth of soul can do for a traditional song like this one.

Many of the "old hymns" are beautiful masterpieces that souls of another generation crafted from a heart of praise, gratitude and love for the Savior...

Arrangements that bring new life to these old songs for our modern ears are simply the best...

Thanks for what you do!

This is my 1 of 2 favs. And in 2001 in Cinci Ohio at a Live event, you all sang this and I crumbled! Awesome! The other is In the Garden :)

Be Blessed!

A group from our church just attended the Beth Moore event in Minneapolis. What a blessing!!! Your group did such an awesome job leading us in worship and I LOVED this song. When I woke up this morning I could not get it out of my head. Oh that I would arise and go to Jesus each day with that same conviction. Thanks for your honesty in your ministry and God bless you and your beautiful family.

After listening to a Tim Keller sermon, called "How Sin Makes Us Addicts," he closes with the words from this hymn. The sermon was based on Jeremiah 2:1-8, 23-32. And his explanation of the charms is beautiful... We are trying to make ourselves beautiful with our own ornaments/charms (success, beauty, etc) all of which fall short. But, God's promise is that He can make us spiritually perfect and beautiful. Christ came to present us spotless and radiant, as a bride (Ephesians 5), so that when we believe in him his beautiful record can be put on us. How beautiful we are in God's sight because what Christ has done for us.

What a great question! Seems like many are asking it. I could not find it online so I went to my concordance. I found that charm is[ 'eben]- precious jewels/balance stones. .. or more likely [hēn] (2834) ornament to grace and the reference to ten thousand is [rebābâ] (8047) a myriad; or a virtually countless number referenced often in the scriptures. In His arms is where He welcomed many including children and the undesirables. Reference to Hebrew is [dôn] or to remain. Conclusively, throughout the Gospel we see a Savior who calls us to Himself with enough to satisfy our brokenness. :-) thanks for asking... feel free to do more research... blessings
