A (Really) Bad Mullet Does Not A Bad Singer Make

OK, all you haters. Have you heard Michael Bolton sing When A Man Loves A Woman? Georgia On My Mind? How Am I Supposed To Live Without You?

I know, I know. The hair. The poser facial expressions. The whole 'I Said I Love You But I Lied' debacle. But, come on. Those are some pipes. Some of the strongest, grittiest soulful singing to hit the airwaves.

You don't have to agree with me. It's subjective, I know. I just happen to be right. ; >)

Another great singer? The person who's singing a duet with me on my Christmas record.

Honestly, I feel like he sounds a little whiney. I have no doubt of his capabilities. He has a very strong voice. Too much grit for me maybe?

LOL!!! you know I was just messing with you!!
Mullett's or bust!! I did like him when I was like 10. See you in San Antonio right! =)

are you stinking kidding me?! Love Natalie! You two will sound amazing on that record. so looking forward to it!

Woo-hoo for you! And her! Love you both! It's totally on my pre-Christmas list already.

By the way, R & E Webb are friends of ours, so I feel slightly less dorky (or more?) knowing that they are your friends, too. I've been tempted to ask you to be my friend on facebook, but i'm guessing most of your "friends" are faux friends like I would be :)

Anyway, I'm glad you are using your gifts for Him so that others like me can enjoy praising Him along with you. And you have great taste in friends ;)

Yes -- I'll give you Michael Bolton because he is amazing. I still stand by Steve Perry as being right up there with Michael. Oh, the 80's...some of the best of talent and some of the worst! :)

I think a really good post would be the best and worst mullets of music. Steven Curtis sported a mighty fine mullet, as did Smitty. I'm thinking that there might have been a Travis Cottrell mullet at some point. The mullet is no respector of persons or music genre, because there is of course the Billy Ray mullet and the Richard Marx mullet (speaking of Richard Marx -- another great singer of the 80's). The mullet is also not gender specific because I cannot even go there with the female mullets that I've seen come and go in Women's Ministry.

What was this post about?

Oh yeah, Michael Bolton is a great singer!

:)

Blessings,
Dori

Ah, I love Natalie!! What a great treat...cannot wait to hear it! And I had one part of the name correct.

BTW, my Chris and I do have a Michael Bolton CD--nothing like Georgia on my mind. We agree.

How awesome! Can't wait to hear the two of you together!

See you soon...heading to the airport in a couple of hours to San Antonio! :o)

No she's not!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so singing her new song out loud all the time....and of course I'm blank on the name. :)

I'm impressed. She's got one amazing voice. I follow her on twitter too and she makes me laugh as a momma!

See you in SA!! Can you feel the excitement brewing?? I gotta drive to Nashville at 5am to catch the early bird with Ms. Patty!

SEe ya there.
Hugs,

Natalie Grant... That's awesome!

I gotta tell you something. I am coming to San Antonio and I have been a tad anxious about it. Last night I had a dream that I was there and you came out to lead worship and you were like 80 years old! I don't have a clue where on earth that came from! It was a little frightening, actually!

I will be relieved to actually SEE you on stage so I can wipe this image out of my mind! :)

See ya soon,
Darlene

I love Natalie Grant and can't wait for your new album!
I like Steve Perry, too, and I totally agree on the Carrie Underwood....that girl can SANG!

EEEHHHHHH

wrong again.

and the score is minus $2000.00 for Mr. Cottrell.

after reading these comments, I
sooooooooooo dare you to come on stage Fri night in either a mullet wig, or an old man's gray haired wig.

Now THAT would be funny.

Travis, honestly, are you trying to dig yourself out??? I have to tell you, you have reached one name status in my admittedly small circle. You are simply known as TRAVIS. As in..."Did you know TRAVIS is working on a Christmas CD?" and "TRAVIS will be in Las Vegas, right?" Kinda like Elvis or Bono... despite the Micheal Bolton and Jackson admiration thing.

See you in LV in two weeks!! e in AZ

I bow to your almighty capability to payoff and sweet talk one of the greatest female vocalists of the common Christian era, guilting her (I'm sure) into singing with you on your (our) Christmas album. Does this mean I can claim that I've recorded on the same album with Natalie - even if it was with 40 other people? (Good going, dude!) Thanks for the blogroll shout out.

Jeff Bumgardner said...

Oh, yeah...I forgot...Michael Bolton rocks! I must agree, totally.

3girlsmom said...

He automatically loses 10 points for the mullet. Plus, he loses another 5 for being almost bald AND sporting a mullet.
And kudos for the shout out to Kelly Clarkson. She really is fantastic and is UNREAL live. You should catch a show if you get a chance.
Headed to San An tomorrow. See ya there!

Uhm....I LOVE Michael Bolton - unashamedly so. I STILL play his songs...

I know I should be embarrassed...but I can't help myself. The man can saaing!

Tina said...

I am STILL jumping up and down over the duet!!! I have goose bumps and I haven't even heard it!

AND to think, I am still trying to get over you and Cindy working together.

PROUD of all GOD is doing... so stinkin' proud!

Unknown said...

Ok... Bolton is ok. But not THE best... I still say that Nat King Cole is s-m-o-o-t-h....

Nat Grant???? WHOO HOOO!!! Good for you! What a cool duet that will be!!! Can't wait to hear it.

Several years ago I saw Michael Bolton at the BlueBird Cafe. He didn't sing; rather, he came to hear someone else sing....Girls in the Round, I think. Coincidently (wink, wink) I sat next to him. (OK, OK I may have shoved a few girls out of the way to be six seats from him, but those are details). Let me just say, the mullet rocked. It looked so much better in person (through a smoke-filled room) than it ever did on camera. And, let's face it, we're talkin' the 80's. Those of you without sin, cast the first perm! (Hairetics!)

Jennie said...

I totally agree with you about Michael Bolton!!! He is still one of my all time "faves" (I'm a child of the 80's too). And I may be alone on this but "Said I loved you but I lied" was one of the songs I could not listen to enough...sorry! :) He is so very soulful and expressive! His album of arias was also very beautiful and unique.

Lindsee said...

You are hilarious! And, I LOVE Natalie Grant. That girl CAN sing!

As far as singers...I agree with Whitney, Celine, Josh, Michael B., and I've been thinking lately about this...I have to say that Shane & Shane are pretty much at the top of this list, too! I mean seriously, have you heard the harmonies?! Amazing.

Just thought I'd add that!

See you in ONE day! Woo Hoo! I'll be with those crazies, Abby and Shelly! :)

Do you consider it a mullett when they don't have hair on top? But his voice is unbelieveable! Totally agree! And Phil Collins - one of the best! Lionel Ritchie also has a great voice.

I think you are right, we do look for different things from females and males. Females - powerhouses; Males - performance. I think that's why it's easier to pick out the best female.

Awesome about Natalie Grant! Cannot wait to hear it!

Shut up! I love her!

Thanks for the heads up on the Christmas Album. The two of you will be amazing. I can't wait for that one. See you in San Antonio, and what a pleasure it is to have you as a Miesta.
God bless your travels,

I agree, he can sing. Thankfully he sang his mullet off.

I'll give you M. Bo. Especially now that the mullet is a non-issue since he's practically bald.

But I am shocked that my Martina didn't make your list...but I'm all about choosing people who can pull off a crazy range.

Anyhoo...CANNOT wait for tomorrow, brother! See you in San An

that's right... you can't judge a mullet by it's song... oh wait. strike that. reverse it...

listen "can't nobody break your stride, can't nobody hold you down...oh oh..you've got to keep on movin'!!" I took liberties with the pronouns but hey...you rock, Trav and your choices were spot on...and WHO DIDN'T make bad hair choices in 80's--can anyone say Aqua Net???? Bangs were as high as the Himalayas, people!!

On another note (no pun intended) I cannot WAIT to hear you and Natalie...WOW!

SHUT IT! Are you serious! Her songs "I'm In Better Hands Now" and "Held" have encouraged Adam and I so much this year through our trial. I am thrilled you get to sing with her.

And I am still reeling from the fact that you are touring with CINDY MORGAN this Christmas!!! Are you guys coming to Houston? Near here? PLEASE let us know! When Adam told me I about died. How awesome!

Please tell your sweet wife I said hello. I continue to pray for you guys in this new season.

The fact that Natalie Grant is doing a duet with you is the only thing rescuing you from complete and utter nerdiness for all eternity after the Michael Bolton post. Well played.

I wonder how you would look with a mullet? Anyone here proficient with PhotoShop???

I wondered what happened to you. you (at least i think it was you) lead worship at a camp I went to about 15 years ago in missouri, or was it new mexico or one of the carolinas- i can't remember. Anyway, i had a dc of yours that i listened to for years, until i lost it last year in a move. oh, and no judging here- i love me some kelly clarkson.

I'll admit - I do like Michael Bolton. The man can sing. However, I'm not a fan of WATCHING him sing. :) Can't wait to hear you & Natalie together.

Loved, loved, LOVED the music this weekend in SA. Thanks to you and the rest of the praise team for an awesome weekend! Very powerful on so many levels!

Travis,
I was at the siesta fiesta and the Fully Loaded conference this weekend. I regret not saying hello to you. I read your blog but have never commented! I even took your picture with two other ladies and didn't even get them to take mine! Anyway, just wanted to tell you that what you said to us at Fully Loaded about Keeping our Posture when feeling overwhelmed or stressed, meant a lot because I needed to hear that. I had such a good time at the Fully Loaded conference. Thank you so much for the encouraging words and for the great music. I have had a great weekend. You and Kelly Minter did a great job!

I didn't get a chance to meet you this weekend. I try to do a quick attack, I mean hello, after the
Siesta Fiesta (and did you sing that little diddy? I think not!) BUT the dome workers wouldn't let me go where you were and I didn't really wanna yell and cause a commotion! hee hee

Great weekend y'all gave us. Thank you!

jen said...

*faints* Okay, I just heard you sing this weekend in San Antonio for the very first time. (I know, took me long enough, anyway...) :) You have an AMAZING voice! What an incredible gift of God! And the reason I'm fainting? Natalie is one of my favorites. The two of you on the same CD might be equal to manna from Heaven!

ps - highfive on the Michael Bolton bit. I'm a closet Bolton listener. Shh.... don't tell....

Sharron said...

Travis, you goober! Talk about pipes. I was in San Antonio this weekend and you hold a note longer than any singer I know of and you are so much more real than Michael! It was such an awesome weekend and I loved all the praise and worship. Michael "ain't" got nothin on you!
Blessings! Keep praising!!!!!

Natalie Grant!!!! OOHHH!!!
---I LOVE her hair! I know nothing about HEARING good music only about experiencing it and did I ever have a God moment or two or several at LPL. Travis, you so brought God to me. It was a taste of glory to come. You so invited us to John 1:38,39 ---what were we seeking? HIM and we so found HIM there in you and through you. And you led us to HIM to do what we were created to do! OHHHH!!!
