I'd Give You the Shirt Off My Back

A couple of weeks ago I flew to LA to sing at the Crystal Cathedral. I was excited. I had been there before, and had a great time singing with their beautiful orchestra. And this time, I was going to get to sing with their choir too. Last time, Angela Bassett was on the same show as me, so it was cool to get to meet her. Her husband, Courtney Vance, was there too. He's on some TV show, right?

So the Sunday after Thanksgiving was when I was scheduled to be there. I was home all of Thanksgiving week. Actually, I had been home for TWO WHOLE WEEKS with no traveling, which was a wonderful Thanksgiving treat. I was the picture of chilled for the holidays. Lots of cooking and playing with the kids and decorating for Christmas. Lots of it. But nothing even remotely high on the stress meter.

Thanksgiving day came and went. We had a great day with lots of family and friends. And lots of food with sugar and starch and cream of (insert creamy soup type here) (apparently I like using the word lots lots). Friday was more of the same. So, when Saturday got here, I was ready for my trip to LA. Not physically ready, as in packed and standing at the door. But emotionally I was OK with leaving, since I knew I would be home in just over 24 hours. I kind of put off packing, because Ang and the kids and I were doing fun things and having a laid back and fun day. I packed a little and played a little, did a little laundry, headed out for lunch and shopping all together, came back and packed some more. The time came to head for the airport. I put my suitcase in the car, said my goodbyes, and headed to my flight.

Everything about the traveling was easy and low key. No waiting. No crowds. No problems. I had a great flight.

At one point during the flight, I said to myself, "Self, did you pack your church clothes that were hanging on the closet doorknob?" But I immediately dismissed the thought, choosing to not be stressed, even if I did forget. Which is very not like me.

As soon as we landed, I turned on my phone. The first thing that popped up on my phone was a text from Angela that said: DID YOU MEAN TO PACK THIS SHIRT AND TIE HANGING ON THE CLOSET DOOR?

Pause.

Dang.

Pause.

I looked at my watch. It was 9:35pm.

Pause.

Ouch.

Pause.

OK. Let's think clearly and not make more of this than needs to be. I mean, there are real problems in the world, so I am going to keep this in perspective. I'm sure Dr. Schuller won't mind if I wear my black Adidas hoodie under my suit coat. It will be HIP and NOW and I might even hold my mic like Tobymac.

The church sent a driver to pick me up. As soon as I saw him, I said, "Hi! I'm Travis. Nice to meet you. Thanks so much for picking me up. Now, could you get me to a TJ Max pronto?" or something to that effect. He was all over it. So we hopped in the limo (a perk of being a guest at the CC...let me clarify that that is NOT HOW WE ROLL...but it makes for a good story) and hit the highway.

We drove and drove and drove some more. FInally we exited off, and I saw a bunch of shops and strip malls in the distance. We pulled up to a - YESSSSSSSSSS - TJ Max. He drove me right to the door. I looked at my watch. It said 9:59. Literally. I jumped out and there was a man at the door.

"We're closed."

"But I just need 60 seconds, and - "

"Nope. We're closed."

I didn't even try to persuade him. I knew he didn't care that I was going to sing on a world wide broadcast the next morning, and have to wear a black Adidas hoodie with my suit. Especially since I looked like a punk kid who was hopping out of limo and wanting special treatment.

I ducked back in the car, and the driver told me that Mervyn's next door was open until 11. I had never been to a Mervyn's, but I was happy. So I bolted into the Mervyn's. I had never seen anything quite like it. It looked like Dorothy's house, post-tornado. It was going out of business, and this was 11pm the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Do you get the picture? It was A MESS. I didn't even recognize the piles of things as clothes.

I made my way to the men's section. I finally found some dress shirts, and began to look through them. Couldn't find my size. Couldn't find a color that would match my suit. After about 15 minutes, I was despondant. I just grabbed a couple of shirts and a really bad blue tie, went to the register and paid.

I tried to act happy and grateful to the driver, but I was really bummed. As we drove to the hotel, I was so tired (remember? LA is two hours behind Franklin, so it was past midnight to my body). I tried to tip the driver...he was so very nice and gracious and helpful, but he wouldn't take it. I drudged me and my luggage and my new purchases to my hotel room, and began to analyze the possibilities. I pulled out the suit and the new ill-fitting shirts, and laid them out to see if it was going to work. It was clear pretty instantly that it wasn't.

AGAIN...let me iterate that I know full-well that there are REAL problems in the world, and I know that eternity is not hanging in the balance with my decision to wear or not wear an ill-fitting shirt. I am aware of this, and was telling myself this over and over. And over.

But still.

I changed my Facebook status to something that expressed my lot. Immediately people began to leave messages. Some funny ones, some encouraging ones, and one very interesting one. One guy said this: If you are close to a Nordstrom, you can call them, and often times, if you can get hold of a manager, they will help you in your dire need.

REMEMBER THIS LATER.

I'm sitting in my hotel room, wondering what in the heck I'm going to do. I decide I'd better find a solution and move quickly. I went to the desk in the lobby and asked if there was a 24 hour Wal-Mart close by. It's 15 minutes away. I have them call me a cab, and I make my way.

I will save you the details, but just know that this particular Wal-Mart was not so much in to the 16 - 34/35 dress shirts in any other color than hunter's khaki. And there were no ties. Well that's not true. There were ties with Christmas lights printed n them. But they didn't match my new hunter's khaki shirt or gray pin-striped suit.

The trip was a bust. And it was 1am (3am Franklin time).

I came back to the hotel and decided that I needed sleep worse than I needed a shirt at this point. I went to sleep and sent up one last prayer with my final waking second.

The next morning, I decided to do it. I was going to call Nordstrom. I found out there was one 5 minutes away. Good news. I called. No answer. I tried again. No answer. I hopped in the shower and started getting ready. You know, with my hoodie. It was 7am at this point, and my ride was coming at 8. I tried Nordstrom one more time. SOMEONE ANSWERED! It was someone who who works in housewares. I explained to him my situation. He told me that he didn't know if anyone could help me. But he said that there was an employee shopping hour scheduled at 8am. He said if I could find someone nice to come to the door, MAYBE, just maybe, they would let me in.

So I called the driver and asked if he could come and get me 30 minutes early. This was, of course, after dialing 3 wrong numbers and waking various Crystal Cathedral staffers and their families. He picked me up at 7:30. We were there by 7:40. I walked up to the big glass doors, and instantly saw my new best friend. Only I don't know her name. I waved her over to the door, gave her my kindest and most pitiful plea, and she told me to hold on for a minute. In no time, the men's store manager was at the door, letting me in and selling me my new favorite shirt and tie. Thank you, Terence, men's store manager at Nordstrom somewhere in California.

SCORE.

I was so happy. And I know that Dr. Schuller was somehow relieved that I didn't wear my black Adidas hoodie. Or my hunter's khaki shirt and shiny light blue tie with my gray pin-striped suit.

As an added bonus: my luggage didn't make it home on Sunday night. It seemed like the right ending to the trip.

It was an adventure. A perspective-strengthening adventure.

PS - You can see my new shirt and shiny new tie on Hour of Power this weekend.

Okay, that was close to the trip I had recently where all 4 of my girls...let me say that again...all 4 of my girls started throwing up simultaneously during our descent into Phoenix airport. Thus I finally figured out the need for those barf bags afterall. We all have to have a trip now and again that keeps up humble Travis.

Travis,

I tried to pack for my hubs when we headed out to a wedding in Nothern California. I was so proud on myself! Then he says "Baby where did you put my tie and dress shoes?" Immediatly that sick feeling came on me and I replied with much sorrow, "Please forgive me I left them in the closet at home", so much for feeling helpful.
We grabed a tie from a good buddy of his (the only tie he owned) and proceeded to stop at Payless for a pair of mens dress shoes. All the while I am feeling sick to my stomach. He was a great sport about it and joked with everybody about raffling his shoes off to the highest bidder at the wedding.

On a helpful note I live in Southern California and if you every find your self in a jam when visiting the CC give me a shout via email and I'll be glad to help you out. Thanks for sharing and I can't wait to see you on the Hour of Power.

I can just imagine you at the Nordstrom door pleading with your new best friend! That is the best commercial for that store EVER.
And, I've been listening to Ring The Bells tonight with the lights off and the fireplace glowing. I LOVE it! O Holy Night...perfection. What Child Is This...perfection. The drums opening O Come, O Come Emmanuel were so dramatic! And I listened to Once More playing on a local radio station the other day...I am so happy for you!
Merry Christmas to you and your beautiful family.

Yes, there are bigger problems, but OH MY WORD, when you are going through something like that, it's HUGE, right?

Now, you have my curiosity up and I want to call Nordstroms just to see if they will accomodate. I live an hour away - maybe they will deliver???

I can't wait to see the shirt and tie on TV - setting DVR now :)

I was really cheering for the khaki christmas tie walmart option. Maybe next time???

PS - picked my man up from the airport today. Bless you sweet Jesus!

Oh, Travis. Some things just go like that don't they? I'm sorry for all of the stress you went through about your shirt - but so glad someone came through to be your hero. :)

Wow. What a horrible experience. I really feel sorry that you almost had to wear things that weren't nice and stylish. I really do. That's a big deal to me, so I'm glad it worked out. Even things that are small to others, but still very important to us, always get turned around by God when we're at the point of no hope. He has a way of surprising us!

LOL! Oh my goodness! You crack me up! When I saw that you went to Mervyn's, I said out loud, "NOT Mervyns! It would truly be a miracle if you could find anything in there. Oh no!" I'm so glad that Nordstrom's came through for you. Now if the airlines will just find your luggage...

now THAT is a classic story. save that one.

As we would say here in the deep South, "Bless your heart". What a time you had, but God was faithful and provided you not only with something to wear to the CC but also something to wear the next time you perform to a group of hunters or the NRA!! LOL!!

This is hilarious!! My husband is rolling his eyes at me for laughing so hard at the computer!! Although it reminds me of the times I called the owner of the small-town dry cleaner late Saturday night or early Sunday morning to get the suits that HE forgot to pick up!

Love, Love Ring the Bells!! "Jesus Saves" is my favorite! I will still be listening in June.

Praying for you and your family during the GLORIA tour. May you all have a Merry Christmas! and a Happy New Year too.

The worship you led at HFBC in November was awesome and worship at Converge lifted my heart and spirit. Thank you for serving the Lord. Thanks for telling us a story about The Nord. Thank you!

I once left all my make-up at home and didn't realize until 30 minutes before leaving for a old high school buddy's wedding.

I was 8 months pregnant. With no make-up. I went to Dollar General. It was not such a score, but I learned some humility.

Glad you got in Nords.

Wow. And I thought my one week struggle to get a passport was tough. At least I didn't have to look good on TV after that debacle! It's nice to know there are people in my state who represent us well. Glad they were there to help!

Oh my! What a humbling story. I hung on to every word, er, every hilarious shirt attempt. It sounded way too familiar. Last time we took the 8th grade to DC, all my clothes got locked up in dry cleaners except clothes/coat on my back---somewhere cause of icy weather and I had to wear clothes of other mothers on trip. You can hide anything under a coat. BUT NOT ON TV---can't wear a coat, no hoodie either. But when we came to Austin in view of a call and I forgot all of my makeup at home---24-hour CVS here I come! Didn't quite work but they called us anyway. Looking for that tie on tv.

That's some funny stuff. I would have probably popped a blood vessel stressing...way to hold it together and keep things in perspective. I would have enjoyed the hoodie option though:)
And on a different note, I now own your Christmas CD compliments of Big Mama's drawing a while back. How much do we love her?! And not just becasue she gives away awesome gifts! Anyway, I am absolutely loving it!!!! Thanks a whole bunch!

Oh, what an adventure for you here in the OC! The next time you don't pack your Sunday meetin' clothes give me ring!! Not only is my hubs a 16 34/35 with several very nice and rarely ever worn dress shirts (and no flashing Santa ties!) but if that's a little too creepy for you, I am the queen of "what is open at this hour and how do we get it done in 17 minutes!" here in OC! That's how we roll quite a lot! Great story - thanks for sharing! Can't wait to see your show!

I used to work for Nordstrom, and we did those type of things all the time. They will even go shopping with you in the store for your wife or whoever and walk around carrying your stuff! (FOR FREE!) I met a customer at a downtown office building, with his paid for clothes that I had picked up at tailoring that morning. He needed them ASAP for a job interview he had that morning. He made a dash into the bathroom and changed and I helped him tie his tie (he had never owned one) and off he went to the interview and I went into work. He called me later to tell me he had gotten the job! Yeah! If you have any time (like you do) I would suggest e-mailing the corporate offices in Seattle (look on-line) with your story (your blog would do, then you wouldn't have to retype it). He might get a customer service award and get rewarded with a 33%discount. This is why Nordstrom is rated so high in Customer Service. Glad you found some help!

Travis,

What I want to know is, after this night you had, how did you stay awake in church the next morning? I would have been in the back with my head bobbing up and down (or with my head thrown back snoring) and I can imagine that would not have looked good on national TV. You are a man of strength.

I remember one time my wife and I were on our way to a play, and we went out to eat on the way. Somehow she spilled her drink, and in a lapse of sanity I ended up laughing at how it happened. As I was laughing and we were cleaning up, I ended up turning my drink over into my lap. All of it. A full glass of sweet tea. (I know, serves me right.) After dinner we ended up in KMart near the restaurant buying all new clothes so we could make it to the play on time. And we were not very happy with our selections, but at least we were dry.

If you need a shirt this weekend, give me a call...

Hey Travis - Beth Moore's daughter Amanda suggested on LPM's blog today to give you a shout out if we've heard your song on Houston's KSBJ radio station. I have heard your songs, I think starting last week sometime. The first time they said your name, I thought, "Go Travis". I was really excited for you and the music is beautiful. Just wanted to let you know. Have a blessed Christmas. Oh.......cool name too. I named my son Travis after Lake Travis near Austin, TX. I spent 15 or so years of wonderful family summer vacations there. He is 20 yrs old and home from A&M for Christmas break. He called yesterday and invited me to dinner tonight to meet his girlfriend. I've never known him to have a girlfriend, so I know this is special. I'm kinda nervous and excited at the same time. JoAnn

I remember your Moses performance there several years ago, chills all over! Some of our closest friends are Amy and Denver, I think you know them! :) anyhow, it is a pleasure to worship our Lord with you and you are great! Your the only CD's we have in our car! OK long comment , but dude you rock it!! We love you!!! I feel like such a goober now.

I've been meaning for some time to tell you how much I am SO VERY BLESSED everytime I listen to your Christmas CD (which is frequently!). Seriously blessed and inspired to worship along with you (except for the thumpity thump thumping which isn't exactly worship but is a lot of fun). I think one of the things I love is not only the wonderful music, but feeling like I "know" you from listening to you and Boo and Big on the old podcasts. You're not just a fancy snooty musician. You could be anybody's brother and I just love that. Thanks for being so real. (and I'm so glad your shirt story had a happy ending.) : ) MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Laughing with the perspective of having been there before. I went on a four day very fancy retreat (in the middle of nowhere!) for my husband's business and brought an empty suitcase except for shoes and toiletries. I only had the clothes on my back and I wore shorts and a t-shirt because I didn't think I would see anyone until the next day.

I still shudder when I think about it and it's been about 15 years.

Hey Travis,

I don't know if it was you or not, but if it was, THANKS! I now have the song I asked about and am the happiest, smiling-est child of God!! Also? David may come to sing at our church now. What a GREAT GOD we serve!

Also? Another really huge praise--I heard you on the radio today here in Colorado Springs on KBIQ. I had truly been praying that God would open doors to get you on our airwaves here. Sydney and I clapped and praised God!!

Praying for you and your family!
Blessings, Bro!

Didn't know you had a blog until Amanda posted it on LPM tonight. I just wanted to say how much I love your music and how it has supplanted my journey ever closer to the Lord...from seven years ago as a new Christian when songs like You are Forever made me bend on knee during my vain morning runs and turn them into homages to the Creator "painter," and now to today after I've facilitated Bible studies of my own and then been so humbled by God; and now songs like "In the First Light" put me back knowing in my heart where that Christmas focus squarely belongs. I just wanted to say Thank you. Thank you for giving up the time away from your family to travel with LPL and make music that inspires other lives to closer, more reverent relationships with our Savior. You are a favorite in our house now, and I know you provide the songs that my family and future children will fall in love with God over. Thanks again!! Merry Christmas

Third, me and my fam LOVE your Christmas CD!! It is amazing! My 10 year old, Hannah, listens and dances to "Jesus Saves" over and over. If you have anytime this CHristmas break, you should check out the solo she choreographed to it. I think it would totally bless you to see how your song has moved in the heart of a little girl! It is def a home video so forgive the quality, but the dance and her heart are amazing! The dance was a "gift" to my husband and I for Christmas.

Oh....one more thing. Hannah had some joint issues start when she was 2. She could barely walk. SO...now to see her dance before the Lord is such a testament of God's faithfulness. If you watch the dance, you will see one part where she bends her wrists into a prayer like position. She could not do this before. That is why you hear my husband shout "Hallelujah!" God is so faithful.
