Randoms

A few random thoughts...

- After looking at the pics on my last post, I felt the need (and by 'I' I mean 'Angela') to tell you that (once again) Levi decided he needed a hair cut, and cut a big chunk out of the front of his hair. So, he had about half an inch of no hair in the middle of his long bangs. So, the haircut person had to chop off most of the rest of it. Now he has about half and inch of no hair in the middle of his short bangs. We're working on this self-hair cut business.

- I played tennis yesterday at 1 in the afternoon. Note to self: 1 in the afternoon is probably not the optimum time to play tennis in July, on the hottest day of the year so far.

- As part of our staycation, we all went ice skating on Sunday after church. We had a great time. It was the first time Angela and I had been skating in a LONG time. I think we had only been ice skating together twice ever. We went on our second date (I later told her it was a good excuse to hold her hand), and one other time, back maybe 8 or 9 years ago. I used to roller skate and ice skate all the time as a kid. But here's my observation. Angela and I could not get over the amount of pain our feet were enduring while we were skating. Is it because we're old, and not meant for such activities anymore? Or is it because my center of gravity is...well, uh...different now with this late 30's version of me? Either way, my feet were in pain the whole time. But it was still loads of fun. And my kids loved it. Even Levi. They have these heavy bar things that little kids who don't know how to skate can hold onto and push around. Genius. The ones our place didn't look exactly like this, but it was the same general idea:

- We are heading to Nashville Shores (the local water park) today. I love a good water park. I have never been to this one...I hope it is as good in reality as I have been hoping it is.

- Wipeout continues to be a tv highlight for our family. It was awesome last night. There are a few changes in the obstacle course every week, and that keeps it interesting. The hosts (John Anderson and John Henson) and hilarious. They took the climbing wall aspect off of the Sucker Punch wall. Very interesting. And how about the girl who couldn't see the pole? "Where's the pole?" Too funny. We made a pallet on the floor and turned off all the lights...and drank our Sonic slushes and watched. Fun staycation times.

Off to the water park. Hope your day is a great one...

I have been having a ball on your staycation. Keep those descriptions coming. As for the "self-haircut"--my kids are all grown and gone but I got such a laugh out of looking back on those times. I believe this happens to every mother. In fact I was once the one to perpetrate a bad haircut on my child. Never again did I pick up a pair of scissors to cut hair.

Have a great day at Nashville Shores. I feel you will have a few stories to tell us when you all get back and seriously, it's hot in Nashville, sooooo humid, yuk.
I laughed about your tennis match at 1:00 in the afternoon. A few weeks ago I decided I would try and play tennis again, after walking 2 miles. Let me mention that I am 43 years old and why I felt the need to punish myself is beyond me. My friend and my brother went and we just played at a tennis court at a school yard. There were kids at the playground next to the courts and I believe we amused them. 5 little boys came over and sat on a bench and watched us play but they were heckling my brother. They told him he couldn't beat the girls but then one little boy decided to cheer him on. They called him Santa Clause and 100. hehe Come on 100 you can do it. It gave me the edge I needed to beat him. LOL!! I told them the next time we played it would have to be at 5:30 a.m. when it is only 100 degrees here!!
Have a great day and stay cool.

For the water park lover...

Our favorite amusement park is Holiday World (in Santa Claus, Indiana) which also has a water park, Splashin' Safari. Watching the travel channel one day, we were excited to see that Splashin' Safari was rated the #2 water park in the entire WORLD! #1 was in Germany. So if you're up to about a 3 hour drive, you should check it out! Free parking, free pop all day, free sunscreen, no smoking; it is perfection. Except for the whole walking around all day in a swimsuit thing.

Oh my gosh - the Pole Girl. We were "so shamed for her"! That is the closest to death by laughter I have came to in a long time.... especially loved it when they circled the pole in yellow and wrote the word "POLE" next to it with the arrow pointing to it! Bless her heart.... and the whole "never been kissed and I'm 20" speech was a little too much information, I was thinking somebody stop her, please, oh please.

We were kinda sad that "ridiculously good looking Neal Smith" didn't win, cause the "Ninja" was on my last nerve with all his hoopin and hollering.....

Glad to see another family loves it as much as our family does.

We are hooked on Wipeout, we died laughing when the commentator said, "oh, you are going to need some cream for that!" Fun times.

I am sad to say our family cannot take "wipeout". All I could hear was Melissa Moore's "I'm stupider now" comment. We found ourselves completely annoyed with the commentary...mute was the next option....soory....should I not be disagreeing on your comment board? I feel like the savages are going to get me when I hit "publish"....wink! Ü You can opt to leave me off! Ü

OH...the self hair cut...I completely understand this.

My girls cut each other's hair about this time last year. Emma had what we called the "mini-mohawk" Her older sister took her almost grown out bangs and chopped a small portion of them off almost to the scalp. As it grew out she looked like she had some sort of growth coming out of her head.
Here we are one year later and finally have it under control. Well, Emma's at least. (She decided about a month ago to pay her big sister back. She waited until sis was sound asleep and then did the EXACT SAME THING. Here we go again.)

Heath and I were dying when the announcers kept saying "Where's the pool?" and then they said "where's the platform?" So good. That's just good television.

Cracking up over Levi's hair situation - tell Angela I never even noticed! He's too cute for it to matter!

Have fun at the water park. Man, I love that kind of stuff. There's apparently a Six Flags about 45 minutes from here - who would've thought it!?

We've had the self haircut thing going on before!

I decided to walk yesterday during the hottest time of the day and seriously almost passed out.

What was I thinking?

Why do they do that?! My daughter is on self haircut number four. And its always right in the front, almost to the scalp. By the time it does grow out, I wonder if she is my Gabrielle or Billy Ray Cyrus: business in the front, party in the back?! I tell ya!

You make it sound like everyday should be a staycation. Really...good times. I'm so glad for y'all!!

And we enjoyed Wipeout last night, too.

As for the cutting of hair--our second child struggled with the need to do that. She attempted it three times. But by the age of 6, though, she stopped. I have no idea what to say...just pray (and be thankful it isn't your darlin' girl).

Praying for you and your family!
holly

PS Does Angela want to send me a recipe or a few for the Siesta Cookbook? I'd love her strawberry cake recipe to be in it! So far I have received $350 towards a water well (or a few) in pre-orders--Yay God!!

Funny water park story! We went to a local Texas Water Park formerly know as Wet'n'Wild oh about 12 years ago - maybe even this week. My roommate at the time and I took my three kids (Justin, 8, Brittany, 6, and Taylor, 4) Get the picture - three small children - first trip to a water park.

We found one stray life-jacket in the small child size - so we stuck it on the smallest child. We found a slide with about three feet of water in the "splash" pool and proceeded to take the kids down the tamest slides in the park. We thought it would be a good idea to send the boy, then my oldest daughter and then me and then my youngest daughter with roomie bringing up the rear. We thought wrong! Terribly Wrong.

The oldest daughter attacked me as I came up out of the water, she said, "MOMMY, MOMMY! I almost drowned."

The boy was fit to be tie angry at the lifeguard whom he swore held him under. And, the little one with the life jacket hit the water giggling loud. She came out of the water gasping for air and squealing "Mommy that was fun, let's do it again!"

The rest of the day we could not get our two drowned ones to go on any ride - not even the "Bubba Tub" which was a big rubber raft that can hold like 110 people - and floats down a giant slide in, and I'm not kidding - an inch of water. We spent the rest of the day laying in the shallow edge of the "kiddie pool" watching my kids bounce around under giant mushrooms.

Score a big Zero - actually two for Mommy on that little trip! Woo Hoo!

I felt sick to my stomach just thinking about playing tennis at 1 PM in July!

This heat is a killer! You can't go exercise outside with out thinking you might not make it.... :)

Yes, we are having a blast on your Staycation. Big article in today's paper about staycations---and I thought you coined the word. You are that clever. You're a great dad who will never give up on your kids. You're a great husband who will never give up on your God. Lots of fun to hear about your staycation days.

Travis,
Please give us an update on Nashville Shores if you get a chance. We are visiting my in-laws, who live in Smyrna, in August for "vacation". I would love to have something like that to do rather than sit around and look at each other. Grace loves waterparks, so if it's a good one maybe I can talk the family into going!

Hello! Just caught up on your blogs for a few days. I love to read them, but I am not the best blogger. My hairdresser still gets after me for self-haircuts. She says she can tell even if I try to be REAL careful. Ice/roller skating used to be our favorites when we were kids. Of course, the roller skates were the kind that you strapped to your tennis shoes and you had a "key" to tighten them on (which never lasted long). We also skated on the neighborhood sidewalks -- you ALWAYS knew where the cracks were so you could step over them. I broke my arm skating down a very large hill -- got going so fast I knew I would shoot out in the street at the bottom. So I thought -- just cut across this grass and "bump" into that tree and you'll stop. You bet I did. Ice skating was on a pond in the park a few blocks from our house. It's all filled in now. I guess things like that aren't considered safe anymore. Glad you are having such a great staycation. And I LOVED "O Holy Night" -- can't wait or the CD. Blessings to you. Mary C

Travis,

Haven't been here in a while...you probably don't remember my face. Anyway, loved your report on your "staycation." You taught me a new word. Where have I been? Curious how your time at Nashville Shores went. Been there. Wasn't too impressed but maybe it's better now. What did you think?
