Papaw Is Ready For Idol

I'm feeling like a Papaw today because my doggone right knee is killing me. I'm not really sure why. And I so hate that these words are coming out of my mouth, but my right hip is hurting too. What in the heck? It snapped when we were leaving the Cracker Barrell tonight at 5:15.

Ok. That part isn't true. But it might as well be. To top it off, I watched just watched that Lawrence Welk Sketch from SNL, and it made me actually want to see The Lawrence Welk Show. I am disgusting myself.

So, who's ready for the Idol finale? I can't wait. It's been a great season. I can't remember if I have even blogged about Idol at all this time around. But the Cottrell household has been riveted. I think this might have been the best group of singers in the finals of all 8 seasons. Especially the guys. Anoop was an early favorite of mine from his first audition. So were Danny and Matt. I still think that Danny might be one of the best singers I have ever heard. Dadgum. He is great. I was shocked to see him go. Sort of. You gotta give props, though, to Adam and Kris. They went for it every single week. The girls were not so strong this year. Except for Allison, who grew on me as the season progressed. She is one heck of a good singer. When she has some maturity to add to the mix and depth of her talent, she will be amazing. And I love that she seems to be really unaffected by all of the hoopla...she still seems like a normal kid. With rock and roll hair.

I really hope Kris pulls out the win. I recognize that Adam has great vocal ability, but I am not a fan of his voice. I wasn't even a fan of that kind of voice when hair bands were big in the 80's. For crying out loud, I was buying sheet music to Running With The Night by Lionel Richie. I wasn't big on the 80's metal (although I do have a very faint memory of hanging out the window of my Subaru in 1987, riding home from Water Country with my friends, singing an ungodly Def Leppard song to the top of my lungs. I am not proud; I'm just sayin'. ). Kris' voice and artistry, on the other hand...he is AWESOME. Good grief, he has a great pop voice. Not extremely flashy, but great nonetheless. I will buy his record. And I will be voting tomorrow night.

I love that Kris made it to the finals, because the producers did not pick him to make it far at all, as you can tell by their early editing. Of course you know that they pretty much hand pick who we will vote for the most. They give all of their picks lots of camera time early on, and it's those very people that make it the farthest. They give us back stories and lots of one-on-one time with their chosen few, and those folks are ALWAYS the majority of the finalists. Never has a contestant that we did not have early camera time from made it to the finals. The closest we ever came was Elliot Yamin in season 5, who came in 3rd. I think the Kris phenomenon totally took them by surprise, because they had pushed Danny so hard from the beginning. I hate that they know how to manipulate us so well...but they do. Still, I enjoy the show. And I think it's going to be great tomorrow night. Expect the judges to call it overwhelmingly for Adam. And then expect Kris to win. Yesssss. I have my theory...and you probably have come to this conclusion, too...that everyone who likes Adam is already voting for Adam. But many people who were voting for Danny will now vote for Kris. Hmmm...it will be interesting.

OK. Papaw's gotta hit the hay. After I take my Metamucil and set the VCR for Matlock, of course.

I shall restrain myself. Consider it my gift to you.

Welcome back Travis. I've missed your AI insights this year. I'm very excited about Kris in the final 2 and hope he makes itall the way. Read somewhere that he is a worship leader at a church in Arkansas. Love it when God's people get a big platform!

Well, Papaw..

Don't forget to sort your pills in your M,T,W thingy either, okay?! Tomorrow night is senior night at Captain D's, too...don't forget that..dinner bell at 4pm.

HA!

Okay, mister..I am game for either of them to win..I agree that Kris could pull out a win, he's really shown almost as much artistry as Adam just not quite as flashy, eh?

I LOVE Adam when he tones it down and forgets to screech...he's just.so.good. Kris's risky choices Heartless, She Works Hard For the Money, etc...and his arrangement of "Ain't no Sunshine"..we're just unbeatable! It's gonna be a great finale!!

Thanks, Allison, for sharing that....we will be praying for God's will to be done.

Papaw?....Seriously???

Accurate prediction, I think. I'm not too proud to admit I got unlimited texting just so I can kill myself voting for Kris 8 million times tonight. He's from Arkansas like me, so I think there's actually a rule that I have to. Or something.

Thanks Allison for sharing the insight that you had on Adam. I have been saying Adam needs Jesus since the first time I saw Adam. God is so good to have Adam and Kris to be room mates for some time. I thought it was rather cool for Danny, Kris, and Adam to be the finial three. God is always at work.

I am so in agreement with your post Travis. I don't see many Danny fans crossing over to vote for Adam. I will be working my fingers to the bone for two hours this evening.

I think your assessment on the Danny votes going to Kris is spot on. I love Danny, but I love Kris too. I've enjoyed some of Adam's performances, but I think he evokes a lot of strong feelings. You love him or hate him. Only I'm luke warm. Which doesn't match my theory.

And you know why Kris will win? After spending 2 1/2 years there, those Arkansans are true to their own! The whole state will be lit up with calling.

Kris does have a great voice... but Danny was our favorite. I cried when he sang his last song...

See you this weekend, Papaw! :0)
Praying for all the details to come together , including good health and a mighty visit of God upon us all.

Yeah...Kris is a worship leader at our church. He is very humble and God is using him in the lives of the other idols!

Lovin' how God is blessing someone who is more interested in other's finding Jesus than winning American Idol!

Will be voting for Kris for as long as I can stay awake after the show!

Let me know how Matlock turns out and I'll tell you about Magnum PI. Anyway, I'm also hoping that Danny fans will be more likely to turn their votes to Kris than Adam. Seems like if Danny was their style, then Kris would be the obvious vote! We'll see... I love a good upset!

Hey Trav. Have been wondering if you are OK. I was disappointed to see Danny leave. I wanted Danny and Kris. But we'll enjoy watching. Glad your back. MC

I have one word that will change your life ... chiropractor!

Now for AI ... we were big fans of Danny and Kris was a close second, so I'm hoping he wins it all!

Glad you're back.

Papaw, don't forget that Hogan's Heroes and Perry Mason are also on. Do you know how to set the VCR, or do I need to come and help you set it up? :)

I guess I am an old hippie or something because I actually like Adam's voice. He needs Jesus, no doubt, but I think the boy can sing. He's just a bit of a drama queen... perhaps a little too much for me. Having said that, however, I will likely pull for Kris. And that's because 1)I'd love to see a believer win... and 2)He has a broader appeal to the general public, as opposed to Adam who will only appeal to the folks in one particular style.

Hey Travis, sorry 'bout your knee and hip. But the knee bone is connected to the thigh bone and the thigh bone is connected to the hip bone. Sometimes our ailments tend to react like dominos. It's sad really. One a lighter and fluffyer note, my house is divided on Kris and Adam. We are psyched to watch and vote tonight. My daughter likes Kris but thinks it might be better for him if he doesn't win b/c he will have more freedom to do the music he wants with less pressure to crank it out quick (ala David A. vs. David C. from last year). Should be interesting, nonetheless. And I must comment on Lawrence Welks as my great Aunt called him. She often babysat me and the sibs on Saturday night growing up and we thought "Bobby and Cissy" we're the bomb. Oy!

Stopped by to say I saw a preview clip at All Access of your upcoming CD release... It gave me chill bumps watching it... Can't wait to get the CD, and eventually the DVD...

Blessings Travis!!

Sorry about your knee, old man.

Juliana likes the Lawrence Welk Show (since we only have basic cable, it is one of the few 3 year old friendly options on a Saturday night on the rare occasion that we're home). When she was even younger, although she has always been a fan of all things musical, I thought it was just the bubbles at the beginning that was clenching her enjoyment of the show. Then it occurred to me... it's like Barney for grown-ups. Singing, dancing, costumes... then it all made sense.

Idol: I've been pulling for Danny from the get go, but I like all of the final 4. Juliana likes Alison, whom she calls "pink" (because of her hair). After all, pink is her favorite color. I didn't realize how affected she was when "pink" was beaten out by the guys, until she reenacted it for days with her toys.
Although I won't be disappointed either way, I hope the Kris wins if for no other reason than the fact that Simon (with all due respect for the areas in which he is gifted), always seems to abhor humility, and views it as a sign of weakness. Melinda, Danny, Kris... he has told them all to stop putting on the so-called "charade" of being so humble. Personally, I think he feels threatened by it. I like it when there is proof that humility succeeds.

GO KRIS GO!!!!! Pulling for Kris bc Adam gets on my last nerve. Sorry folks but I couldn't take the screaming any longer. It all sounds the same to me. Ugh.

Hope you can stay awake for Idol....its getting close to dark.
Ha!

I have not watched the show this season, but have checked the web site to view an occasional performance. I had no idea Kris was a worship leader. Had I known, I would have been paying closer attention to the show. Someone mentioned that Simon seems to be threatened by humility. I have to add also, after his response to Mandisa's performance a few seasons ago, I think he is threatened by Christians in general. That too could be a factor in the shows lack of focus on Kris early on.

Daughter of the King said...

Let the voting begin as soon as AI finishes tonight!! After last Wednesday's show ended, I said, "That's okay, Danny, look where Mandisa is now!" & "Go, Kris!!" Would totally buy his CD!(Adam's singing gets.on.my.nerves! Please, America, tell me you DO NOT want a screeching rock star for the next AI!)

So glad you are back in the world of blogging. Have missed your take on all things Idol and hope the hip and everything else will be on the mend quickly.

Love Kris Allen - the hometown here in Conway showed up in mass to support him a few weeks back. I think the majority of the town was at (of all places) Simon Park. He was overwhelmed and blown away by the support.

I'd love to see him win, but want what God wants for him. He may simply be in that place to influence others and show them you can be talented and humble. The two can go together!

Love Kris...plus he's a worship leader which makes him all the more wonderful!!!

You forgot to tape "Golden Girls". Oh, and I'm hoping beyond hope that Kris wins. Not because I like him best, but because I like Adam least. Kinda like politics, huh? I am still a Danny fan.

After watching last nights show, I wonder if Adam is the black finger nail polish wearing screaming rocker guy or is he the clean cut suit wearing soft singer???? I mean, who is this guy?

KRIS MUST WIN!!!!

The suspense is killing me.

My girls have been pulling for Kris since the first time they saw him. My 10 year old said she thought he was really nice and not full of himself. I would love to see him win BIG!

Hope the knee is better! I can't move because of that stupid Shred DVD that is taking over blogland. Praise the Lord I'm just about done with my 30 days...if I live!

Oh, the thrills of getting older. Let's hope Kris pulls it out because I don't think I could stomach Adam for long. Several months ago on your blog you asked for prayers for Gavin Owens and had a link to his parents blog page. I have continued to pray for this little boy and follow his ups and downs. He is so precious, and may the Lord heal his body according to his will. Everyone should check out his blog this week because Make A Wish has sent this family to Disney World http://gavinowens.blogspot.com/. I can't wait to get the new cd and then the dvd. May the Lord continue to bless you & your music ministry.

I missed most of the finale because I was at Bible Study but did get to see the winner announced. I was so so happy. Adam is a very talented guy and he seems nice - but people who say Kris isn't talented are wrong. He's a different kind of talent and his humble attitude totally won me over. He will make an awesome clean role model and he deserves the win.

Travis--I've been a lurker here for awhile and can I just say that you crack. me. up.?! I was getting fired up reading what you were saying about the AI producers thinking, "yeah! they totally got me! and I didn't even realize it until just now when Travis pointed it out!". I have to admit I was a little nervous for Kris to win because I wonder how it will affect him and his sweet little wife of only like 7 months or whatever. I just feel so sorry for what's coming her way and I really hope all this doesn't change his humility. I know this is a horrible comparison but I just keep thinking of the Gosselins and what fame and fortune have done to them. I'm so glad God hasn't chosen me for the limelight!! :)

Glad to have you back.
You were on the money with Kris. Hope he uses this platform for Kingdom work.
If you can tear yourself away from Matlock, we would love to hear more.
